On Sima Qian's View of Motives

司马迁撰写《史记》,为的是探索中华民族史的发展规律,通过描述许许多多的人物活动来实现这一目的。人物活动都受着动机的驱使。司马迁充分认识到了动机的重要性,同时又是动机与效果的统一论者。

With the view to exploring the law of the development of Chinese history, Sima Qian portrayed various figures in his prestigious work 'The Record of History'. Knowing that man's activities were driven by different motives, Sima Qian fully understood the importance of motivation. Thereby he believed in the integration of motive and effect.
