RECENTLY, the China EconomicMonitoring Center conducted asurvey among 940 citizens inBeijing and Shanghai. The surveyshowed that 64 percent of urban citizensknow what mortgages are. Among them,56 percent said they would considertaking out a mortgage if it wasnecessary, 13 percent would not, and theother 31 percent were undecided.
