THE Jingpo ethnic group, with a population of 110,000, dwells mainly in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. The ethnicity has five branches: Jingpo, Zaiwa, Langwo, Lachi and Puluo. Before the 1950s, they made their home on the chilly mountaintops or hillsides. Now, some of them have moved to the foot of the mountains.The Jingpo branch has its own language and written script; the Zaiwa branch has created a written script as well for its own dialect. At school, students can learn the Jingpo and Zaiwa languages in addition to Mandarin Chinese. Currently, there are Jingpo newspapers, books and magazines, Jingpo television and radio broadcasts and Jingpo-dubbed films.Most of the Jingpo ethnic group believes in the celestial deity, and some of them are Christian. They also worship their ancestors.The major festival day is 'Munaozongge'--which means 'dance together' in the Jingpo language.The Jingpo homeland boasts a good climate with plenty of rain. The rich soil is suitable for growing all kinds of crops.The Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, which borders India and Myanmar, is an important Chinese trading port. Ever since the reform and opening policy, the trade in the border city of Ruili has blossomed.
