FROM May 8 to 12, 1998, the first annual computer festival was held at the Zhongguancun High-Tech Experimental Zone in Beijing’s Haidian District. Contributing to the festive atmosphere were the large and colorful advertisements, publicity banners, streamers, balloons and crowds buzzing about on either side of the street.
