The northwest of Hunan Province, the earliest area to practice regional national autonomy, is inhabited by a large branch of the Miao ethnicity. In 1952, the Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Region wax established; it was promoted to Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Prefecture in 1995, and again to Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in 1957. The prefecture now includes seven counties and one city with a total area of 15,486 sq. kilometers.
