A Retrospect to Literary Translators' Social Position and Social Value

１０００年来，无数翻译家做出的巨大贡献数次改变了中国的命运，然而几十年来翻译界热衷探讨具体的翻译技巧问题而基本上忽略了翻译家的社会地位在降低的事实。翻译家社会地位降低的原因之一是泛滥的劣质译作败坏了翻译界的声誉，原因之二是整个社会对翻译家的辛苦重视不够。为改变这种状况，一方面翻译界应该向社会各界大力呼吁宣传，另一方面译者也应努力提高自身素质，本着对历史负责的态度。

For over one thousand years, great contributions made by numerous translators have changed the destiny of China several times. In the past decades, only techniques on translation have been warmly discussed, the degradation of translators' social position has almost been ignored. The reason lies in the facts that widespread worthless versions have spoiled the reputation of this field and that the whole society has not yet paid due attention to translators' hard work. To ease the embarrasement, translators must not only make a great appeal to the public, but try to perfect themselves in producing fine versions.
