Experimental studies on local hydrodynamics and mass transfer behaviors in bubble column and air lift loop reactors have verified the existence of bubble distribution zone (BDZ), a region above the gas sparger in a bubble column or a air lift loop reactor. This region is characterized by its dynamic state of bubble coalescence breakup and its high mass transfer rate. Correlation of local K La with operation conditions was established. Simulation of bubble coalescence breakup was made on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence. The calculated data agree well with the experiment results. The results presented in this paper might be of fundamental importance to the development of gas liquid reactors.
