The paper is a critical analysis of Dimmesdale, the hero in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. The author of this paper holds the view that Dimmesdale, different from Hester, is a contradictory character with conflicting emotions and that the sharp conflicts intricately demonstrated between his conscience and reality, between reality and his ideal, and in turn, his ideal and conscience finally fall into an inextricable knot in which Dimmesdale wrestles, wriggles, and is strangled. He exerts himself to the utmost to relieve the situation, yet the fact that the best in him conspires with the worst brings about his further interior torture. The only way to his purification is his death at the scaffold and then he has gone through the ordeal of a tortured soul and truth wins the victory. The purpose of the paper is rather to try to disclose truth in human nature than to perform a mere literary analysis of the character.
