也谈英语表语分句的因与果——兼与晋元新先生商榷

Talk on the Cause and Effect of English Predicative Clause

作为一种语义关系,因果关系并非只依靠语言表层结构使用的因果连词来直接表达,还广泛地映现在语言的深层次结构上,寓于意义上、逻辑上的内在联系之中。晋元新先生曾在《外国语》杂志上先后发表六篇论文,对此现象进行了系列研究。其精确之阐释、透彻之分析,使笔者获益匪浅,深受启发。然而,其题为《浅谈英语表语分句的因与果》(载《外国语》94年第2期,下面略称《因与果》)一文里有些提法则令笔者不敢苟同。现不揣冒昧与浅陋,提出下文同原作者进行商榷;失当、欠妥之处,谨请作者、学界前辈和方家赐教指正。

] In the article which was carried in the Journal of Foreign Languages(No. 2, 1994), Mr. Jin Yuan Xin pointed out that the predicative clauses introduced by the conjunctive adverb 'why' indicate the element of cause(or reaaon)and that the main sentences coincide with predicative clauses in the way of indicating either cause or effect. In this paper, however, the author holds different opinions and offers his own analysis of the above aspects by providing convincing examples.
