Shannan Prefecture。located on the bank of the Yarhung Zangpo River,is the cradle of Tibetan civi-lization.It is about 200 kilometers from Lhasa,the regional capital。With an area of 73,000 square kilo-meters and a population of 310,000.There are 12 counties,146 towns and townships,and 861 villages un-der its jurisdiction.
