Sichuan Province.located in Southwest China on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River,covered an area of 485;000 square kilometers,or 6%of the nati onal to-tal and had a population of 83.56 million at the end of 1996.It has 20 cities and prefectures(includi ngi au-tonomous prefectures inhabited by ethnic groups)and 180 counties a nd districts under its juni sdiction.
