China had a population of 1.22389 billion on its mainland by the end of 1996,according to survey data from the State Statistical Bureau(SSB).The crude birth rate was 16.98 per thousand and the rate of natural in-crease 10.42 per thousand.The total number of births was 20.67 million and the net increase 12.68 million.The national population plan and all provi ncial plans have been fulfilled.
