There are over 1,000 regular higher education institutions (HEIs) in China with a total enrollment of over two million students and nearly 400,000 full-time teachers.There are about 1,700 research units affiliated to them staffed by over 30,000 R&D personnel;and in case all university faculty engaged in both teaching and research are converted into full-time equivalent (FTE)researchers,there are about 140,000 FTE researchers in the regular HEIs in China.
