NANJING is an old,beautifulcity with rich resources,as wellas the capital of Jiangsu Prov-ince,one of the most economically de-veloped provinces in China.Nanjing isone of the four central cities in theYangtze River Valley and one of theseveral coastal cities open to the outsideworld.The city holds special import-ance in terms of economy,history andgeographical position.Nanjing is 300 kilometers east of themouth of the Yangtze River.In the westof the city is the hilly land of thesouthern part of Anhui Province,notincluding the westem section of theNingzhen Monutains which stretchover into the city proper.In the northof city is the natural barrier of theJianghuai Plain,but in the northern partof the city the Yangtze River lies.In
