THE Nanjing Traditional Instru-ment Ensemble was establishedin 1986.It is one of he mosthighly reputed traditional instrument ensembles in China.It has 16 members with an average age of 34.The ensemble has earned a good international reputation through quite a lot of successful performances abroad.In 1988 the ensemble was selected by the Ministry of Culture to perform in the former Soviet Union,Romania, Bulgaria and Sweden.In 1989 it was again sent by the ministry to perform in Belgium,Holland and West Germany.During its stay of two months in the latter three countries,the ensem-
