In order to determine the influence of the mold-casting interface on the cooling of a casting, pure zinc was poured into a mold, and a load was applied to the casting during solidification. The time-variable interfacial heat transfer coefficient K between mold and casting can be calculated by the program designed in this work. In addition, the temperature field of mold and casting can also be determined by using time-variable interfacial heat transfer coefficient K, which describes the practical condition between mold and casting.On the basis of experiments and calculations, it is indicated that there is air gap between mold and casting, and that the air gap varies during the solidification and the pressing period. Finally, the authors discuss several factors affecting the temperature field of the molds and the casting.
