t the end of last year, broke out a piece of news about the flowers produced in Yunnan Province, Southwest China: in the whole year of 1994, 210 million sprays of fresh flowers and over 1.2 million pots of potted flowers were turned out and four million U.S. dollars were earned out of their exportation. For the first time Yunnan took the place of Shanghai by topping the list in China in terms of the annual output of fresh flowers and the increase rate of flower production over the past three years. And, following the nationwide plum-blossom and orchid shows held in Kunming, capital of Yunnan, an international flower show will open in the same city in 1995. The flowers and plants of all climatic zones are well fit for the climate in Yunnan, which enjoys rich resources of precious flowers and plants. On the basis of the rapid growth of the nongovernmental flower and plant transactions in the 1980s, Yunnan Provincial Government has decided to develop this mew profitable industry by means of advanced technology, and also planned to establish a number of flower-growing bases in Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Simao, Dehong, Baoshan, Dali and Lijiang with Kunming as the center. In the foreseeable future, a network will shape up to mass-produce export-oriented flowers all over the province
