The Four-Corner Coding System and Its Optimization

四角号码法是汉语辞书最优秀的排检法之一，方案一公布即被图书馆用于馆藏检索，１９６４年经文化部汉字查字法整理工作组推荐为四种标准查字方案之一，当前又在境外汉字信息处理中用于汉字输入。本文针对四角号码法存在的一些问题，提出优化个别规则、增加附号位数和调整笔形代号以减少重号和空号等具体措施，可望把四角号码法优化为能兼用于辞书排检和汉字输入的汉字编码法。

One of the best of its kind, the four-corner coding system has been in wide use in entry arrangement and indexing for Chinese language dictionaries at home and abroad. Also, it has found use in the searching system for library stock ever since its inception. In 1964 , it was recommended, by an authoritative group in charge of Chinese character indexing reshaping under the Ministry of Culture, as one of the four standard indexing systems for use in Chinese dictionaries. Recently , it has come among the rank of input coding systems most commonly used for Chihese information processing by electronic computer outside our country. However, there exist in the four-corner coding system some disadvantages which would otherwise earn it greater popularity.This paper attempts its optimization by improving on a couple of its ambiguous rules, changing its appended single code into a two-element one, and rearranging part of its stroke-encoding numbers with an aim to reduce the number of character code that stands for more than one character so as to make it a highly effective Chinese character coding system which can be used both as an entry arrangement and indexing method for dictionaries and as an input coding system for Chinese information processing by electronic computer.
