Abstract At the Rio de Jandro 'Earth Summit', officially the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development,156 nations signed the Convention on Biological Diversity. This convention aims to preserve preserve the diverstiy of life on the planet,and ensure that results and benefits from genetic material are equitably distributed between those who comnzercially axploit it and the country that provided it. But recoiling these aims with human needs is a tense and complex process.
