NOVELS representing ordi-nary people’s lives and folkcustoms have emerged inBeijing since 1980.The novels,known as“new folklore novels,”area new literary form.Their uniquewriting style and new approach tolife have won many readers.Novelist Deng Youmei has writ-ten many influential works of thisgenre.His efforts started at the endof the 1970s with short stories suchas“On Taoran Pavilion,”“DoubleCat Ptriting,”and“Searching forPainter Han.”He later publishedsome novels,including Nawi,SmiffPot,Anecdotes in Sihai House and De-scendants of Li Qi.His novels aremore mature and have influencedmany readers.
