On Tao Yuanming's Social Activity in His Early Years

陶渊明在二十岁前有一段交游活动,这段交游活动大体发生在他丧父以后。只是由于他与世不合,所以二十以后才隐居不出。后年近三十为生活所迫,也因心中犹存幻想,所以才又再次 尝试着步入仕途,先后仕州祭酒、桓玄、刘裕、刘敬宣及彭泽令。《与子俨等疏》:“吾年过五十,少而 穷苦,每以家弊,东西游走。”“五十”实乃“十五”之误。

Tao Yuanming ever had some social activity after his father died, but he didn't do like this any longer after he was twenty years old because he didn't acclimate himself to social practice. It was after twenty-nine years old that he entered official circles again because of his poorness and illusion about official circles, which didn't entirely fade yet in his heart. Tao Yuanming said it in the letter to my sons: 'I often rushed about after fifty years old because of poorness.' The word 'fifty' is just a copyist's slip of the pen for the word 'fifteen'。
