ESP是English for Specific Purpose的简称,是指与某种特定职业、学科或目的相关的专门用途英语。它有两个明显的特点:一是学习者有明确的学习目的,即由于特定行业的需要,学习者需要达到在某些学科内使用英语的能力。二是有特殊的内容,即专门化的内容。语言本身的教学并不是ESP的终结,而利用语言实现一个确定的目标才是ESP的真正目的。也就是说,专门用途英语教学要以需求分析为基础来确定教学目标。学生需要什么,我们就教什么,然后再寻求怎么教。

ESP is referred to English for Specific Purpose, is associated with a particular occupation, discipline or related to the purposes of English for special purposes. It has two obvious characteristics:one is the learners have clear learning objectives, namely, due to the need for a specific industry, learners need to achieve the ability to use English in some subjects. Second, there are special contents, namely the specialized content. The teaching of language itself is not the end of ESP, and the use of language to achieve a certain goal is the real purpose of the ESP. That is to say, ESP determines the teaching objective based on the analysis of the demand. What the students need, we teach anything, and then how to teach.
