Hawthorne’s novels have long been liked or disliked for it’s ingenious creativity, novel subject matters, multiplicity of symbolic meanings, intriguing multiple themes, and great significance to all ages. His readers even for more than a century seem still hard to exhaust all hidden themes between the lines. The writer of this thesis attempts to take the short story The Birthmark as an example and from the angle of a reader's response and narratology dig into its abundant and profound themes under the surface meaning for the purpose of illustration of the rich charm of Hawthorn’s literature arts.
