Objective To explore the value of event-related potential P300 subcomponents in the evaluation of cognitive function in schizophrenia patients mainly with positive or negative symptoms . Methods The P3a and P3b were tested in 56 schizophrenia patients mainly with negative symptoms ( the negative group ) and 49 schizophrenia patients mainly with positive symptom ( the positive group ) respectively , and the findings were compared with that from the control group. Results In negative group, the mean latency of P3a at FZ was obviously extended than that in the positive group (P<0.01), the mean amplitudes of P3a at FZ and CZ as well as the mean amplitudes of P3b at CZ and PZ were significantly lower than those from the positive group and the control group ( P<0.01, P<0.05, respectively ) . Conclusion Schizophrenia patients mainly with negative symptoms have more impaired cognitive functions than those patients mainly with positive symptoms and which could be sensitively evaluated by the P 3a assessment .
