The Member of the Wedding has always been regarded as an autobiographical novel about Carson McCullers's adolescence.Reading from the perspective of Bildungsroman, critics try to explore the initiation theme, which overlooks the historical context set in the novel. These four short days depicted in the novel are the epitome of American Southern history in the 1940's.Beyond the turbulent and riotous reality in the South,McCullers constructs an ideal utopia via the carnivalesque images of kitchen, clowns and androgyny to subvert the mainstream ideology of the Southern American society. Therefore,in terms of Bakhtinian notion of carnivalization, this paper elaborates the carnivalesque utopia in the work so as to reveal its subversive nature.
