During 1950s,the public discourse that had been unfavorable to homosexuality degraded the homosexual more severely under the influence of the Cold War ideology.Confronted with such strictures,American gay playwrights rose to challenge and deconstruct the mainstream discourse.Yet,Tennessee Williams was excoriated by some gay critics for his turning away from homosexuality or being unable to portray gay characters in an acceptably positive light.A Lacanian Reading of Williams' Middle Plays presents the unconscious desire of Williams as an obstinate desiring subject braving the mainstream discourse and desiring for the recognition of homosexuality by his readers/audience.
