As translation is the afterlife of the original, revision is the afterlife of translation.Zhang Guruo's translation of Tess of the D'urberville, which was first published seventy two years ago and underwent three revisions,is still porpular today. The revisons coincides with the ups of translation in the past century in China. Some of these revisions are against his original strategy: Idiomatic Translation. This essay focuses on the historical background of these revisions from the perspective of poetics, patronage and idiology proposed by Andre Levefere.
