Four Meetings is a famous international short story in Henry James's early period.Critics tend to owe the tragedies of the protagonists in James's international novels to the failure of American Innocence in the face of European Vulgarity.Such an interpretation is too general.On the basis of Said's post-colonial cultural theories and James's point view of European and American cultures,the causes for the tragedy of Caroline Spencer,the heroine in Four Meetings,will be analyzed in detail.
