As a keen and perspicacious novelist of critical realism, Hardy debunks the industrial civilization in the 19th century. In The Mayor of Casterbridge he presents to us the transformation of nature in the course of industrialization, vividly depicting the gradual shift from the harmonious nature to the alienated one. Thus nature in this novel has a metaphorical meaning and contains some historical implications, mirroring a version of the entire Victorian world. By the lifelike descriptions of nature, Hardy records the history during the Victorian age more truly than any historical document does.
