Style Groups in Translation of Novels

着眼于风格的动态特征,分析小说风格起伏变化的原因,并提出“风格群”的概念,籍此帮助译者更好地理解并再现小说的风格。一部作品根据风格的动态变化可以切分成不同群类。风格群内相对统一的风格特征有助于完整再现风格。风格群间的风格变化,有助于再现风格起伏。最后通过实例进行对比,阐述了风格群在重现风格变换和把握风格特征中的功用。

Unlike most of the definitions which confine their observations merely to the static aspect of style, this paper ventures a view that most of the literary works present a dynamic aspect of style as well, that is, as the story proceeds, style of a text may rise and fall and result in an uneven distribution, thus introduces here a new concept -the style group. This paper proposes that style groups be taken as a unit of translation in the process of style reproduction, the advantage of which lies in that: taking style group as a whole, a translator is likely to keep the consistency of the general style inside the group, therefore preserves the shift between groups. What's more, the guidance of a style group rather than the whole text facilitates recognizing linguistic features which contributes to the stylistic effect of the text, so that a better reproduction of stylistic markers can step from the original work.
