历史上没有一个大书画家是以邪怪小巧而闻名的。"扬州八怪"虽被人目为怪,实则并不怪,只是他们的画风泼辣,与当时正统画派有别而已。八大山人的画不怪吗?他笔下的鸟、鱼、石不皆怪吗?算不算"正、大"呢?前面说过"正"指气韵正。八大山人的画气韵最正。《老子》说:"以正治国,以奇用兵。"治国不可不正,用兵不可不奇。作画亦然,书和画气韵不可不正,用笔不可不奇。
None of the great calligraphers or painters is known for narrow,or strange in the histroy.The'Eight Eccentric Painters of Yangzhou'were considered strange when looking at their works,but in reality, they were not.Simply their styles are forceful and causal,being different from the legit style at that time. Aren't the paintings of the Eight Eccentric Painters strange? Aren't heir birds,fish,stones strange at all? Are they featuring'noble style'? As I have mentioned,'Zheng'means a noble style,and the style of the Eight Eccentric Painters are most noble.Laozi said that,'to govern a state by means of noble spirit and to command a troop in ways of novelty'.A state can not be governed without noble spirit or troops without novelty.The same goes with paintings.For calligraphies and paintings,styles can not go without straightness,while the contents can not go without novelty.
