There are two basic types of characters in American Jewish novels, registering both the richness of Jewish cultural sustenance and the conceptual frame of Jewish existence.Roughly speaking, the two basic types of charac- ters are characters of schlemiel and of victim. The former reveals their self- imposed and outward-imposed Jewish vulnerable social location in the context of social reality;while the latter recalls Jewish sufferings in history. This pa- per will develop a critical analysis based on a close reading of some major American Jewish novels, such as Saul Bellow's The Victim,Bernard Malamud's The Fixer and The Assistant,Isaac Bashevis Singer's'Gimpel the Fool'and Enemies:A Love Story.
