Adaptation or adoption of myths and fairy tales is one of the effective means for A.S.Byatt to depict her central characters as female artists in her novels, which deserves special critical attention.Focusing on the central character Christabel LaMotte in Byatt's summit novel,Possession, this paper is intended to make a comparative study of the different states of existence of the mythic figures and of the central female character within different social and cultural contexts through mythological and feminist approaches in hopes of exploring how these traditional tales work effectively upon the depiction of this female character, especially on her creative identity recognition and reconstruction as a female artist.
