In his novelette The Princess,D.H.Lawrence seemed to willfully get his characters and their actions involved in both mythology and reality. Via various critical points of view and Lawrence's jargons 'natural individual' and 'social individual',this thesis is aimed at expounding how Lawrence constructed the text by means of the contrasts between two poles,i.e.mythology and reality, subjective and objective treatments of the matter, irony and tragedy, natural individual and social individual, etc. Thus, the alienation in which Colin Urquhart and his daughter lived and how they vacillate between the two poles, and the sense of setting Romero's tragedy in his relation with the princess will be excavated.
