Henderson, created by American writer Saul Bellow,is a figure tortured by severe mental illness. The paper intends to make a psycho-analysis of his mental suffering by means of Freudian theory, particularly his notion of anxiety,in order to obtain a deeper insight into the thematic concerns of this highly controversial novel, and meanwhile get a comprehensive view of the social context in which it was written.
