Critics do not pay due attention to Ben,in the World published in 2000 by Doris Lessing, the Nobel Prize winner. This paper shows that this novel is very significant in that Lessing, tactfully using Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as a bridge, has borrowed the tragic plot from the classic Prometheus myth, and subverted it into a postmodern tragedy.Tracing the transformation of Prometheus from a'hero'to a postmodern human'monster'in this novel, we find that the connection crossing time and space between the two tragedies mirrors the tragic deterioration of human nature and human civilization.
