以香草嘉木来比拟美人君子,在中国最早的诗歌总集《诗经》中已初露端倪,而将此比拟手法发挥到极致者当属战国时期的诗人屈原。《楚辞》中大量的香草嘉木之比拟手法并非屈原独创,早在《诗经》中已扑面而来、俯拾即是。《楚辞》中植物的象征意义与《诗经》是一脉相承的,《楚辞》大大发挥了《诗经》以物起兴的手法,营造出似真似幻的诗意语境。《楚辞》极大地影响了后世对植物的情感,也丰富了诗人的想像空间。
