Objective To study the value of the Berg Balance Scale(BBS)and the walking speed(WS)for the identification about the ward walking independency in the stroke patients. Methods The BBS and the 10-m WS of 80stroke patients were measured and analyzed. Results Using discriminate analysis, the BBS and the 10m WS were found to be the good discriminators of independency and non-independence group(accuracy 91.3%).Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were employed to suggest cut-off scores and to determine overall predictability, for BBS:cut-off point 46.5,sensitivity 92.5%,specificity 77.8%and area under ROC curve 0.900;and for WS:cut-off point 0.51m/s,sensitivity 86.8%,specificity 88.9%%,and area under ROC curve 0.956.Conclusion This study suggests that the BBS and the WS were a good measure for discriminating ward walking independency in the stroke patients.
