The Way We Live Now,a short story, written by Susan Sontag in the 1980s when AIDS began to be known and stirred a public panic, inevitably bears the mark of the era,but its significance undoubtedly transcends the 1980s. Sontag's close relationship with Sartrean Existentialism makes it apparent in the story that her own understanding of the two existentialist concepts of freedom and responsibility. The story also heralds Sontag's later essay 'AIDS and Its Metaphors'in which she elaborates on the AIDS topic. While tasting the bitterness brought by the so called freedom without any sense of responsibility, people in the story overcame their fears, walked out of the labyrinth of freedom and bravely shouldered the difficult tasks of looking after each other. Thus, they defused the psychological crisis caused by AIDS and walked towards the real maturity.
