The Tongcheng School in the Period of Literary Revolution of the Late Qing Dynasty

后期桐城派代表人物在晚清文界革命中发挥了重要作用。他们以独立的主体精神介入和推动文界革命;他们的译著形同替古文开出了一个"新殖民地";他们善因善创,创辟了一个新的古文傍支——莲池文派;他们在对古文实行开放性持守的同时,致力于写作经验的提升,产生了具有集大成性质的"文章学"著作。然而,封建理学和传统文化的沉重因袭,使桐城派不能打破自身文化改良的桎梏,最终走向了五四时代"彻底的不妥协的反封建"精神的对立面。

The scholars from Tongcheng School played an important role in the literary revolution of the late Qing dynasty. They came into the literary revolution with their independent spirit and pushed it ahead. Their translated works opened a new area and they established 'Lianchi School' and produced some works on essay.However,Tongcheng School had its own cultural tradition and can not tear itself away from the feudalism,thus going towards the opposite of the May Fourth Movement in 1919.
