上海开埠后外侨的音乐活动早已受学界注意,但现有的讨论多集中在明末清初或民国一段,对于鸦片战争以降直至清末的相关研究仍不够多。该文探讨上海开埠后天主教和基督教新教传教士的音乐活动,所涵盖的时段为19世纪中期至20世纪初期。所讨论的话题主要有三:上海开埠后天主教会和基督教会的音乐活动、上海开埠后教会学校的音乐活动、上海传教士对中国音乐的研究。

The author tackles the Catholic and Protestant missionaries musical life after Shanghai opened as a port city from the mid-19~th century to the early 20~th century, touching these Churches', as well as their schools', musical events and the missionaries' research of Chinese music.
