英国诗人雪莱虽然一直把中国当作未开化、未驯服的蛮族,但在20世纪初,在以救亡启蒙为己任的中国知识分子的热切期盼下,他作为精神偶像,在中国产生了热烈的反响,其中有赞扬,也有激烈的批评。但总体来看,中国知识分子真正关注雪莱的,是其作为一个反抗传统道德,崇尚自由、爱与美的诗人。他的诗、他的生活、他那种希腊悲剧英雄式的战斗精神,都在中国知识分子面前树立起一座精神丰碑。当时翻译介绍西方作家,其根本目的本就不在文学本身,而在借"他山之石""为中国说法"。

In Shelley's opinion,China was an uncivilized country and Chinese were barbarians,but in the early twentieth century,the Chinese intellectuals who were seeking for ways to save the nation from extinction and enlighten Chinese people accepted Shelley as a spiritual idol.Shelley's poems,poetic theories and his life attracted Chinese intellectuals' attention,winning either praises or heated criticisms.Shelley's firm resistance to traditional morality,his respect for individual freedom,love and beauty made deep impression on Chinese intellectuals.His poetry,his life,his fighting spirit represented a spiritual monument for Chinese intellectuals.The paper holds that the aim of introduction to western writers and their works was to serve our own purposes rather than to introduce the literary works themselves.
