This article aims to explore a contemporary documentation art project, which differs from other works of art that take the form of documentation as art,to become a work of art per se.Its focus is on the experience of British artist Ernest Edmonds(b.1942) and his ongoing project titled Notes on...,started in 2000.What is its specificity? What were the origins of this work and its inspirations? By combining the analysis of archival material held at Ernest Edmonds' s archive in Hathersage,Derbyshire, the Prints,Drawings and Paintings Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum,London, and a series of interviews conducted by the author during the past two years with the artist and curators involved in archiving, preserving, and curating Edmonds' s works, this article answers these questions.
