This essay is an attempt to illustrate how knowledge on pragmatics may help to enhance readers' comprehension of literature texts. The analysis is based on one episode from the Story of a Noble Family. After a brief review of theoretical background, detailed analyses are carried out on pragmatic features and politeness of the excerpt. The merits of pragmatic theories are then summarized and discussed.
