Ever since its first publication in 1909,The Sayings of Confucius,Leonard Arthur Lyall's English translation of Lunyu, has been known to English readers for it being sententious, alive and compact of humor and dignity. The translation was meant to general English readers, employing innovative techniques in its pursuit of readability and a word-for-rendering of the Chinese text, including the noticeable contextual terminology technique and the unit-by-unit literal sentence technique. After giving a detailed account of his success in both interpreting and rewriting, this paper argues that Lyall's works presented a systematic and practical solution for translating Chinese classics for general English readers.
