From Pro-Japanese Mentality to Hatred of Japan: the Image of Japan in the Eyes of Modern Chinese

近代以来,随着中日两国国力的逆转,以及日本奉行侵华政策,使得中国人的日本观经历了亲日、师日、疑日、仇日乃至抗日的变化,日本形象则从诚实、可亲演变为阴险、狡诈,反日逐渐成为中国民族运动的常态。中国人眼中的日本形象是由政府官员和文人墨客的访日游记、小说、报刊的报道以及日本对华行动所塑造的。

In modern times,with the reversal of national strength and Japanese pursuit of the invading China policy, the Chinese concept of Japan has changed from pro-Japanese, learning-from-Japan mentality to doubting and hating and resisting Japan. The Japanese image evolved from honest, amiable one into insidious, cunning one. Anti-Japanese national movement has gradually become a normal thing in China. Japan's image in the eyes of the Chinese has been shaped through the travels of government officials and literati to Japan, novels, newspapers and magazines as well as Japan's aggressive actions against China.
