This paper focuses on the image of the Chinese geographer,explorer and writer of the Ming Dynasty Xu Xiake as reflected in his own monumental work"Xu Xiake’s Travelogue".While presenting his readers with vivid and accurate descrip- tions of the picturesque natural scenery on his journeys,he shows himself as an un- daunted explorer motivated by his unremitting pursuit of scientific discoveries and his perpetual wish to break new ground.Such an image differs from those of leisured scholars and mystic hermits often found in ancient Chinese literature.In this sense, his travelogue is unique in that it has both scientific and aesthetic values.
