Margaret Atwood (born November 18,1939) is a Canadian poet, literary critic, essayist, environmental activist, and among the most-honored authors of fiction in recent history. She was known as the queen of Canadian Literature and prolocutor for Canadian literature. Her works are set in Canada, narrating stories of social conflicts between self-identity and social roles with her poetic makings, humor style and logic introspections.Due to her strong sense of feminism and national consciousness, she portrayed female characters with a sense of alienation in the masculine dominant culture, describing their frustrations and choices, dilemmas and pursuit, explorations and survival. Her works are often centered on one of the three themes:feminism, nationalism and environmentalism, with the three complementing one another.Taking her novel "Surfacing" as a case, this paper focused on exploring the theme of Canadian survival under the historical shadow of the French and British colonization and the threat of the American cultural invasion.
