As a fundamental work of western literary theory, (Aristotle's) Poetics has far-reaching significances. More importantly, it breaks (Plato's) delimitation of literary works to explore the aesthetic features, functions and values of 'dark contents'—— horror, murder, crime, etc. Thus Poetics provides both a theoretical origin for Gothic novels and a strong theoretical support for the understanding of Gothic novels.
