The Peony Pavilion, Tang Xianzu's masterpiece, truly reflects the depression of the young women of the Ming and Qing Dynasties and reveals their requirement for the liberty of individuality and strong spirit of the time. The misfortune of Du Liniang, the heroine of the drama, inspires lots of sympathetic tears of young women, resulting numerous anecdotes rich in poetic flavours, in which the groaning and struggling of such women as Yu Erniang, Shang Xiaoling and Neijiang Lady have provided perfect footnotes for Du Liniang's pursuit for love.
